The Federal Opposition has pledged $200 million in funding to restore the nation’s urban rivers and waterways.
In a statement earlier this week, Opposition leader Bill Shorten promised a Labor government would take immediate steps to fund environmental works through consultation and stakeholder engagement.
“Labor will engage state and local governments, local councils, community groups and local environmental organisations to bring urban waterways and habitat corridors back to health,” Mr Shorten said.
Under the proposed funding plan, local environment action groups will be able to apply for small grants to for local projects.
"Local organisations with 'boots on the ground' are the most passionate and effective organisations in combating environmental degradation and promoting sustainability," Mr Shorten said.
