Labor pledges to claw back reef cash
Labor has announced it will terminate the existing Grant Agreement between the Environment Department and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation if it wins the next federal election.
The announcement comes after the Commonwealth Government announced the $444 million grant to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
Shadow Environment Minister Tony Burke made the announcement after advising Dr John Schubert, Great Barrier Reef Foundation Chair, that an incoming Labor Government would cancel the agreement.
“Earlier this year, the Government recklessly gave a $444 million grant to the small, private Great Barrier Reef Foundation against Department of Finance advice, and with serious probity questions hanging over the decision,” Mr Burke said in a recent press release.
