Discussion paper for NT Coastal and Marine Management Strategy

The Northern Territory Government has released a discussion paper on the Territory’s first Coastal and Marine Management Strategy that sets a 10-year direction for the management of the coastal and marine environments of the Northern Territory.

Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Lauren Moss, said the strategy will be based on science and the views of the community, with a focus on boosting recreational fishing opportunities, preventing pollution of our waterways, fostering sustainable industries and supporting the Territory's lifestyle.

The Discussion Paper asks for feedback on identified environmental, social, cultural and economic values and benefits of the Territory’s coasts and seas, roles and responsibility for managing these areas, and the challenges faced in managing this extensive multi-use environment.

A Partnership Group with representatives from land councils, the fishing industry and environment groups has been established to provide valuable insight into developing the strategy.

Public comment closes on March 2 and the Strategy is expected to be completed and released in June.

The discussion paper is available at www.marinecoastalstrategy.nt.gov.au.
