Greenhouse Gas Inventory update falls behind again

Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, in the past published on a quarterly basis, has not been updated since March, missing the June and September quarterly updates for national emissions.

The most recent inventory, which was not released until August, provided estimates of Australia’s national inventory of greenhouse gas emissions up to the March quarter of 2017, and electricity emissions from the National Electricity Market (NEM) up to the June quarter 2017. Release of the December 2016 quarterly update was delayed until June.

Figures for the March quarter showed that national emissions levels, excluding the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) sector, had increased 1.6 per cent relative to the previous quarter on a seasonally adjusted and weather normalised basis.

For the year to March 2017, emissions increased 1.0 per cent on the previous year. This was attributed largely to the expansion in LNG exports, which saw a production increase of 39.7 per cent over the previous year.
